Sanitation Worker Recruitment 2024: The unemployment rate in Haryana has been rising rapidly, as confirmed by central government data. Recently, a large number of graduate and postgraduate youths have applied for the recruitment of sanitation workers on a contractual basis in Haryana.

The intense competition for cleaner jobs was recently highlighted by a recruitment drive in Haryana. The Haryana Skill Employment Corporation (HKRN) had invited applications for contract-based cleaner positions. The application process ran from August 6 to September 2, 2024. During this period, over 46,000 graduates and postgraduates applied for this job, which offers a monthly salary of ₹15,000, even though the minimum qualification required was only an 8th-grade pass. According to the agency’s data, 39,990 graduates and more than 6,112 postgraduates applied for this job. Additionally, 117,144 candidates who had completed their 12th grade also submitted their applications. An official from the Haryana Skill Employment Corporation mentioned that this agency hires cleaners on a contract basis for government departments, boards, and corporations. These employees are responsible for cleaning public places, streets, buildings, sweeping, and collecting garbage.

Unemployment Situation in Haryana

According to central government data, the unemployment rate in Haryana has increased this year. The Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) released on August 16 indicated that the unemployment rate among people aged 15 to 29 in urban areas of Haryana rose to 11.2% in the April-June 2024 quarter, up from 9.5% in January-March.

The data also revealed that the unemployment rate for women aged 15 to 29 increased from 13.9% in January-March to 17.2% in April-June. For all age groups in urban areas, the unemployment rate also rose from 4.1% in January-March to 4.7% in April-June.

Who is Considered Unemployed?

According to the PLFS Weekly Status Approach, if a person does not work even one hour in a week despite wanting to work, they are considered unemployed. This means that if someone does not get even an hour of work in a week, they are classified as unemployed.
